AustCham Shanghai is inviting expressions of interest from Australian stakeholders to join an upcoming Sustainability delegation to China from 18th to 22nd November 2024.

The delegation aims to connect Australian organisations with the innovation in upstream supply chains in China that has occurred particularly in recent years since COVID, and the potential for that to transform sustainable sourcing at pace, at cost and at scale. We aim to facilitate the identification of opportunities where collaboration and partnership between Australian and Chinese organisations can help accelerate the realisation of climate and sustainability goals in the economy of both Australia and China.

Why Attend?

China, as the world's manufacturing powerhouse, has made significant strides in improving the sustainability performance of its manufacturing and associated industries. China represents almost 30% of global manufacturing output and up to 60% of a company's carbon footprint resides upstream in its supply chain – from raw materials, transport, and packaging to the energy consumed.

This presents a material opportunity for Australia business to 'green' upstream supply chains, noting the high portion of goods and products that originate from China, at the same time offering opportunities for Australian expertise and innovation.

· 'Greening' of upstream supply chains: China has a recycling rate for plastics of 31%, almost twice that of the global average, and over 95% domestic material recycling. In 2023, over 95% of e-commerce parcels in China met new sustainable packaging standard, designed to be recycled and made from recycled content.

· Reduction in Carbon Emissions: China ranked 17 out of 120 countries on the World Economic Forum's 2023 Energy Transition Index. Over the past decade, China has reduced its carbon intensity by over 45%, surpassing its 2020 target ahead of schedule. In the manufacturing sector, tier-one facilities are already actively transitioning to new energy solutions for thermal demand to complement the behind the meter renewable energy already in place.

· Waste Management and Recycling: China has implemented extensive waste management and recycling programs, resulting in a 60% increase in recycling rates for industrial waste since 2015. These initiatives have set new standards for waste reduction and resource efficiency.

· Development of new growth industries: China's solar manufacturing capacity accounts for at least 80% of the global market share. In 2023, 40% of China's 5.2 per cent economic growth was driven by the "New Three" industries related to electric vehicles, green power generation and batteries with investment in 2023 these sectors equaling the total GDP of Switzerland.
